TERRACINA, ALL YEAR ROUND

Where history
meets the sea.

A city shaped by centuries of life, an ancient Roman road beneath your feet, the sanctuary of Jupiter Anxur above the coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea beyond. Explore Terracina at your own pace.

FROM ANCIENT ANXUR TO TODAY

A city with many lives.

Terracina’s historic centre is not simply an archaeological site: its main square continues to serve everyday civic life, just as it did in Roman times.

5TH–4TH CENTURY BC

Anxur, the Volsci and Rome

Anxur was contested by Volscians and Romans. Livy records its capture by the Roman consular tribune Numerius Fabius Ambustus in 406 BC; fighting continued, with another Roman capture in 400 BC. A Roman maritime colony followed in 329 BC: this was no single, definitive conquest.

FROM 312 BC · APPIAN WAY

The Queen of Roads through the city

The ancient Appian Way climbed towards the upper town and passed the Forum of Aulus Aemilius. Its paving stones can still be seen in Piazza del Municipio. The Appian Way – Regina Viarum was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024; Terracina preserves an extraordinary urban stretch.

ROMAN ERA · TODAY

The ancient forum, still a living square

The ancient forum remains Terracina’s civic heart. The limestone paving still bears the name of Aulus Aemilius, who commissioned it. The Cathedral of San Cesareo, Town Hall and Roman remains share a single urban space, continuously reshaped over the centuries.

REDISCOVERED ARCHAEOLOGY

The rediscovered Roman theatre

Part of the Roman theatre’s seating emerged after the 1943 bombing of the area. Archaeological work and restoration, especially between 2018 and 2023, revealed the monument beside the ancient forum after centuries of obscurity.
